We’ Moon Land

11 Aug

After driving up mountain hairpin-swings for more than an hour we finally reached our next location. On the top of a narrow, grassy path we could see a big round house rising between curly rasberry bushes and old growing cedar trees. The place we visited is called We’Moon Land and we were just about to enter the mother-house of this small community. Click ‘continue reading’ to read more about We’ Moon Land.

Lava Lake Ranch

11 Aug

After spending a day at the rodeo in Shoshone we all got the feeling of the lively cowboy spirit in Idaho. Visiting a ‘real ranch’ as a next stop in our trip made all of us even more excited. Liz was talking about her dreams of learning how to throw a lasso and Josefine about how she wanted to ride a horse. We found the ‘Lava Lake Lamb Ranch’ in a desert landscape filled with sage bushes and surrounded by lava craters at the foot of the mountains.

Safe Haven Village

11 Aug

DSC_0038

After a night in the small town Spring City, Utah – where a lot of people with Scandinavian roots live – we drove south to visit Safe Haven Village. After driving a couple of miles in Utah’s desert we turned right on a narrow gravel road, and it seemed like we were driving further and further out into no man’s land.

Safe Haven Village is an earth- and family friendly forming community situated on the south slope of White Hill.  The eight founders’ vision is to create a mini society that is self-sufficient by using sustainable techniques, being able to live off the grid and to leave as few footprints on the earth as possible. If any at all.

18th Ave Peace House in Portland

9 Aug

_MG_8143

In Portland we visited 18th Ave Peace House. Here we met a very inspiring man, John Schwiebert.

When John was our age he lived in a commune just like many other people did in the sixties and seventies. At some point he realized that he wanted to live with people that wanted to commit even more to community. He gathered a group of people that was ready to commit their whole life and income in a shared community and they bought the house on 18th Ave.

15 boys on a bus

1 Aug

IMG_0203

Spending the night at a deserted parking lot in front of a Wall Mart near Hood River our dear bus Carla got a new friend. The night was quiet and we were soon to go to bed as an old school bus rolled up beside us. It seemed very similar to ours except that it was over painted with big graffiti letters. Heads started to pop out of each window. One guy stepped out of the bus, then another followed and suddenly a bunch of people were greeting us. It turned out to be a big crew of old friends traveling together just like us – except that there were no girls. We compared busses and checked out each other’s features. Their bus was running on vegetable oil which we found pretty cool, but ours has the solar panel and roof top terrace.

Higher Ground Cohousing

29 Jul

IMG_0279

From the outside Daggett Lane in Bend, Oregon, seems like an ordinary American suburban neighborhood. Trees are planted on each side of the wide street with typical American wooden houses facing a neat and clean pavement.  Behind these houses we found Higher Ground Cohousing Community – the only cohousing in Bend. The space and gardens on the backside of the houses are connected as common community space.

When we arrive to new communities on our trip it’s always hard to know what to expect and what will await us. In Higher Ground Cohousing we got a very warm welcome and we were all very overwhelmed by the community’s hospitality and interest in us and the life in the bus.
